Hi Rachel! I just wanted to take a moment to thank you. My daughter Amelia, age 3 1/2, was recently diagnosed as being on the "high end' of the spectrum. A patient of mine happened to ask me to recycle an old copy of the Brattleboro Commons and I happened along your article about Autism Myths. You have succeeded in explaining my daughters challenges in one article where all the specialists in the area have failed. It would seem that you and she share the same challenges - she is super audio sensitive and many of the other misconceptions that you explain also seem to fit her. She is the most amazing child, very smart, funny and creative, and with your insight we have been able to adjust some of our lifestyle to help her accomodate to a "normal" childhood. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your experiences like you have. You have given my family a HUGE gift. Sincerely, Tedra Knauss.

And don't forget the handy dandy note pad...
We use them in Zen retreats, when talking is forbidden, to convey essential info and questions. (I love Zen sesshin... NTs are usually so quiet then. LOL)
Congrats on developing another succesful strategy! Every day's an adventure, and you're the Indiana Jones... =0)

Great idea! You could also type the cards up for your friends and give them your e-mail if the have something important to share with you. I've been encouraging family and friends to resort to texting, e-mail and instant messaging for quite awhile now.

that's pretty cool. i'm also very sensitive to sound, and have been experimenting with using earplugs while i'm out, to cut down on the harsher noises.
but does anybody else here find themselves in the (bad) habit i've developed, of being the one who is filling up the quiet spaces with their own chatter? one of my theories is that it's an attempt to exert control over my acoustic environment, and/or, an attempt to control a conversation which is usually very hard for me to follow, unless i concentrate like crazy. neither theory has been proven, yet.

Wow... I'm generally considered to be a pretty well adjusted and successful aspie. I wonder if the powers that be had a "reason" for making me deaf? It's probably the reason I've coped as well as I have.

Congratulations on finding a brave new way to tackle the world.

These are some really interesting ideas! I'm glad you had such success at the store getting groceries. That's a difficult one for me (booming announcements, beeping registers, screaming children, clattering carts...omg). While your list may seem a bit overwhelming, just remember (with any list) you only have to do one thing at a time. I know that when I think of everything all at once, I get way stressed out. Tackling one thing at a time gives me more peace of mind.
