Journeys with Autism

Reports from Life on the Spectrum

I’m tired of the Asperger’s label.

I’m tired of people using it to distance themselves from other autistic people.

I’m tired of the folks who imply that having Asperger’s makes being autistic okay, but that being autistic is somehow not okay.

I’m tired of being put into some sort of nonsensical order in which Aspies rate higher than other autistics.

    I’m tired of division.

    I’m tired of hierarchy.

Bev’s latest post says it all for me. And by changing the name of her blog, she’s inspired me to do the same.

At some point, I hope to change my domain name as well. I haven’t figured out the mechanics of using a new domain name and making sure you all can find me there, but when I do, I’ll make the change.

UPDATE: If you’ve found the new URL, you’ll see that I’ve changed my domain name. I’ve specified the proper settings to redirect people automatically from aspergerjourneys.com, but it may take up to 72 hours for the settings to take effect. Argh. Meanwhile, I’ll need to go through and repost all my photos again, since they’re attached to my old domain name.

Note that I also have a new email address: rachel@journeyswithautism.com.

    Hi everyone,

I’ve been thinking about my attachment to getting comments on my blog.

The main reason I’ve been craving your comments is that it’s been the only means by which I know that people are reading my posts. But I definitely don’t want anyone to feel pressured to comment. We all have enough struggles in the world without taking on more. I want my blog to be a place in which people can come to get information, to feel reassured, and to ease the isolation that can result from living with autism. While I welcome your comments, I don’t want anyone to feel obligated to leave them.

So, last night, I officially entered the 21st century and figured out a way to see how much traffic my blog generates. I’ve installed Google Analytics, which lets me know how many folks read my blog from day to day. As long as I know that people are finding my blog and reading even one article, I’m very happy. So please, feel free to read anything you like here while maintaining your anonymity and conserving your energy. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

    Hi everyone,

About a half hour ago, I noticed that comments got closed on my last post. I did not close them intentionally. I’m not sure what happened, but somehow, the little box that says “Allow comments on this post” got unchecked. From now on, I’ll keep my eye on it.

So please, comment away! I love hearing what you all have to say.

Update: I’ve finished reformatting my blog for the new template. I hope you enjoy the aesthetics. It’s a softer look, with less stuff in the margins. (If you’re looking for the links, they’re at the bottom.)

The only drawback was that I had to take out my first fiber art post. For some reason, it refused to format properly. But everything else is back.

    Enjoy!

    Rachel

    Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed a problem with the Comments box in the new template. It scrolls too far to the right when you’re typing so that you can’t see your whole comment line at once.

At some point today, I’m going to port the blog to a new template with better features. When I do that, some of the posts will look a little odd at first, with inconsistent fonts and too much space between paragraphs. I will need to do some reformatting. I don’t want to take the whole blog offline to do it, so I’m going to take one post offline at a time and work on it.

So, if you notice posts coming and going, and things looking a bit on the raggedy side today,  rest assured that it’s not your computer or your eyes playing tricks on you. It’s just me doing  a little renovation work.

    Rachel
